Behtlehem City

The Story

The House of Bread
(بيت لحم)

Bethlehem is very much the historical sister city of Jerusalem, making its walled-off separation from the capital all the more unatural. It is now encircled and encroached upon by dozens of Israeli settlements and the Israeli West Bank barrier, which separates both Muslim and Christian communities from their land and livelihoods, and sees a steady exodus from both communities.

Christian families that have lived in Bethlehem for hundreds of years are being forced to leave as land in Bethlehem is seized, and homes bulldozed, for construction of thousands of new Israeli homes. Land seizures for Israeli settlements have also prevented construction of a new hospital for the inhabitants of Bethlehem, as well as the barrier separating dozens of Palestinian families from their farmland and Christian communities from their places of worship.

An ancient home to Christian and Muslim families alike, Bethlehem (بيت لحم) today is at the frontline of the Palestinian struggle. It’s fertile land and ancient aquifers, enroached by dozens of illegal settlements. It’s families, forced to struggle under apartheid, or leave.

PALESTINIAN SOLIDARITY

The Keffiyeh (pronounced “Kufiya” in Palestine) continues to hold deep and symbolic value, and serves as an icon of resistance, struggle and freedom for the Palestinian people.

The Hirbawi Keffiyeh is handmade using a classic cross-stitching technique honed over generations. The Keffiyeh is traditionally woven on two layers, the “base”, and the “pattern” or “flower” ( وردة) in Arabic. Beyond its unmatched quality, the Keffiyeh maintains its original functionality:

  • Keeping you cool in hot climates under direct sunlight.
  • Effective shielding against dust and fast-blowing winds.
  • Excellent moisture-wicking properties, directing sweat and moisture away from the skin.

The Keffiyeh now comes in a variety of colours and patterns that are evolving alongside Palestinian culture. Today, a wide selection of designs are available, based on historic landmarks, and elements of Palestinian culture, as well as the traditional staple Keffiyeh patterns that are known and loved around the world.

The Original Kufiya

Embroidered by Hand

For All Seasons

The beauty of the kufiya is that you can wear it however and wherever you want. If you are interested in ways to wear your kufiya, check out our “how to wear” video.

The kufiya can be worn by anyone in support of the Palestinian cause. In fact, Palestinians love to see people from around the world expressing support through this meaningful fabric. When you choose to wear a Kufiya made in Palestine, it means you are aware of its cultural significance and are benefiting its original community. Whereas, wearing an imitation just for fashion, without any connection to its roots, can be considered cultural appropriation.

Such threads may occur because during production, the ends of the pattern are trimmed by hand by one of our artisans. Small ends of the threads may remain, but these can be easily picked and removed, or will naturally fall off when the kufiya is washed.

Due to high demand, we allow one kufiya per order. However, you are welcome to add non-kufiya items to your order from the Palestinian artisans we support and promote, saving on shipping costs. See more Palestinian brands here.
